Dean looked at himself in a cracked bathroom mirror. A week's worth of beard growth covered his face. His beard was more gray than brown and Dean wondered, not for the first time, just when had he started looking like his dad. As Dean shaved off his beard, he tried not to think about Sam and what he might look like.
The sound of Cas laughing in the other room helped to ease the ache in Dean's chest. Even now, it was still strange to hear Cas laughing.
They'd talked about it once. Jimmy's soul had been removed (Dean would have said ripped out) from his body, trapping Cas inside. Cas was an angel in name only or so Zach had taunted. Castiel wouldn't be able to 'go home' until he was forgiven and the garrison didn't forgive disobedience easily; even if Cas' disobedience had stopped the Apocalypse. Dean never believed all that 'to forgive was divine' crap, anyway.
Part of Dean wanted Cas to be forgiven, but part of him hoped they wouldn't forgive Cas for a while. Dean knew it was selfish, but losing Sam had almost killed him. If he lost Cas, it probably would kill him.
